Michelin

Michelin is a French brand founded in 1889 by brothers Édouard and André Michelin, who specialized in the production and sale of tires, initially for bicycles and later for cars. After a few years, the Michelin brothers patented a removable tire. At the time, it took at least three hours to repair a plywood tire, but thanks to the removable tire, the Michelin brothers were able to repair it in just fifteen minutes. In 1895, they entered the Paris-Bordeaux-Paris automobile race with a car equipped with removable, air-filled tires, the L'Éclair. These tires were an immediate success, and within ten years, Michelin tires had spread worldwide. Plants were built in England and Germany, and in 1907, also in the United States. During these years, "Dora" was also founded, the first Italian plant, located in Turin. This marked the beginning of production of Bibendum-branded products (better known as the Michelin Man, made from tires). In 1927, another plant opened, this time in Trento, which reached its peak expansion in the early 1970s. In 1961, due to the availability of labor and water supplies, another production center was built in Cuneo. In 1970 and 1971, additional production centers were opened in Piedmont, including one in Turin-Stura. In 1997, the Dora plant was permanently closed, and in 2005, the Trento plant was closed as well. Today, Michelin is the world market leader, owning approximately seventy plants that export tires to 170 countries.
