Ortlieb

Ortlieb is a German brand founded in 1982 in Nuremberg by Hartmut Ortileb. The company has always produced waterproof bikepacking bags. It all began on a trip Harmut made to England in 1981: incessant rain inevitably soaked all his clothes and his sleeping bag. Until one day, Ortileb saw a truck pass by, its tarp perfectly protecting the cargo inside. Young Ortlieb thus found the creativity to produce waterproof bike bags: after returning home, he sewed a bag using a red truck tarp, secured the lid with a piece of belt, and secured it to his bike's rack with a construction hook. His creative mind led him to continually improve his invention, pedaling around the city carrying his self-made rear bags. Soon, friends, and even shopkeepers were asking for several pieces. Rear wheel bags were followed by handlebar bags, until the Ortileb brand was officially born in 1982. During this period, the company began experimenting with the first welds instead of seams, which were still permeable. From that moment on, Ortileb bags became 100% waterproof. Innovation and a desire to experiment and improve are what characterize the company, which began producing bags with "roll closures": a system that guaranteed waterproofness both in the rain and when submerged, as well as greater safety. The hardware hooks on the bags, however, no longer met consumer needs, which is why they were replaced with the first self-locking Quick-Lock 1 fastening system, invented by the self-taught Ortlieb. In the 1990s, Ortlieb's legendary "Back-Rollers" became popular among cyclists around the world, and Ortlieb became synonymous with waterproof bicycle bags "Made in Germany." The brand received numerous awards. The truck tarpaulins of the early years were replaced by new, custom-designed materials, and, of course, new technologies were also added. Many people use Ortileb bags on their adventures, whether by bike, on foot, or on a motorcycle. Characteristics of Ortileb products include hermetic closure systems such as roll closures, waterproof zippers, hook-and-loop closures, and snap fasteners.
