The Zipp 454 NSW wheel becomes tubular and combines advanced aerodynamics with the stability of the Sawtooth™ rim profile, derived from biomimicry, with the benefits of disc braking.

The wheel is specially designed for professional riders and cyclists who prefer the proven riding qualities of tubulars with cutting-edge aerodynamic technology. Using the principles of the emerging science of biomimicry, Zipp engineers have studied the surrounding environment to find examples of how nature achieves speed, control, and efficiency.

The swift and graceful movements of a humpback whale are due to the tubercles on its pectoral fins. These structures have inspired Zipp's advanced development engineers to systematically apply, for the first time, biomimicry to solve the complex challenge of wheel design, with the Hyperfoil™ nodes, which reduce both aerodynamic drag and lateral force.

The Cognition DB V2 hub of the 454 NSW has been reengineered with Axial Clutch V2™ for quicker engagement and reduced friction. Whenever a conventional hub starts to coast, friction within the hub's ratchet mechanism acts like a drum brake to slow down the cyclist. The friction between the hub shell and the driver body during the coasting phase is considered an efficiency loss, especially for road wheels. The solution? The Cognition V2™ rear hub with Axial Clutch V2™ technology reduces aerodynamic drag by disengaging the ratchet.
