MTB Forks

Suspensions are one of the first components to consider when deciding to optimize (and perhaps customize) the components of your bike.

Mtb forks are, together with wheels and frame, one of the components of the bike on which it is possible to intervene more easily (and successfully) to improve riding style and performance.

The fork has the task of absorbing all shocks and stresses coming from the ground thanks to an extension or compression movement.

The mtb forks can be adjusted according to the type of terrain on which you want to ride, the riding style and the weight of the biker.

How to choose the right MTB bike fork?

Before proceeding with the purchase it is good to take into consideration other factors in addition to the suspension and the possibility of adjustment:

  1. Wheel size: the most used size by professionists are the MTB forks 26 and the MTB 29 fork like the RockShox MTB forks and Fox MTB forks. The 29 "MTB fork was initially used only by those who practiced Cross Country and Marathon but, lately, it is also mounted on other MTB bikes as it is considered more stable and with better ability to overcome obstacles.
  2. Tube diameter: a tube with a large diameter is more robust and more rigid and fits perfectly in all MTB Gravity disciplines. For all those who practice specialties in which the stress on the front wheel is modest, it is advisable to install a suspension with a diameter of less than 36 mm so as not to increase the weight of the chassis too much.
  3. Axis type: there are two types of axis: quick release and through-axle. The through-axle fork is the most used because it is safer (in the event that the axle slackens while the wheel is moving), more rigid and more practical to assemble.

If you practice Cross Country or Cross Country Marathon it is good to mount stiffer forks while for Enduro it is preferable to have softer suspensions so as to better absorb the blows coming from the ground.

There are three different types of forks on the market with different properties and specifications:

  • MTB spring fork: the spring has the task of supporting the cyclist's weight and absorbing vibrations coming from the ground. The spring is designed to withstand a certain amount of load and can be adjusted within a certain limit.
  • MTB air fork: the compression or extension caused by the stresses coming from the ground are absorbed by the air contained inside the fork. This suspension is regulated by changing the air pressure inside the tube. More rigid is the adjustment,  less it absorbs vibrations from the ground and transmitting everything to the handlebar. MTB is more responsive and the biker can use less force when pedaling. A MTB fork with softer adjustment better absorbs both the vibrations coming from the ground and the thrust of the cyclist who, however, makes it more difficult to pedal.
  • Oil fork: shocks are absorbed thanks to a system of pipes that contain hydraulic oil.
