Car Bike Racks: Types and Features

1. Roof-Mounted Bike Racks

Mounted on roof bars, they allow you to carry the bike vertically or with the fork clamped.

  • Pros: Affordable, do not obstruct rear view, easy to keep installed.
  • Cons: Require lifting above 1.5 m, increase fuel consumption and vehicle height, risk of scratches.

2. Trunk-Mounted Bike Racks

Attached to the trunk with brackets and straps, suitable for bikes with horizontal top tubes. Often universal or designed for specific car models.

  • Pros: Low cost, quick to mount, easy access due to low position.
  • Cons: May obscure license plate and lights, blocks trunk access, requires precise mounting to avoid scratches or instability.

3. Towbar-Mounted Bike Racks

Attached to the towbar, available as rack or platform types; can carry up to 4 bikes, including heavy ones.

  • Pros: High stability, easy loading/unloading, ideal for e-bikes.
  • Cons: More expensive, add rear bulk, may require extra license plate/lights, can obstruct trunk access.

General Tips

  • Check compatibility with car and bikes (frame, weight, bodywork).
  • Pay attention to the maximum bike weight (average is around 15 kg, but may vary).
  • Use strong straps and clamps with rubber or silicone protection.
  • Consider using locks if leaving bikes unattended.
  • Do not cover license plate or lights: this is regulated by the Highway Code.
  • Respect size limits: no more than 4 m in height, and rear overhang ≤30 cm.
  • For towbar racks and the towbar itself, ensure homologation and update vehicle registration and insurance.

Depending on your usage (occasional, frequent), bike type (e-bike, MTB, city), and car features (roof bars or towbar), choose the most suitable rack: roof-mounted for affordability, trunk-mounted for simplicity, towbar-mounted for stability and heavy loads.
