Speedplay is an American brand born in San Diego, California, with the desire to find a better and faster locking system for automatic pedals.
The first pedal, the Speedplay X, was patented in 1989 by designer Richard Byrne. The company was then officially founded in July 1991. Thanks to the commitment and years of research, the Speedplay brand has established itself on the international market and its pedals are used by professional cyclists such as Cadel Evans, Fabian Cancellara, Jens Voigt, Taylor Phinney, and Thor Hushovd. Speedplay road pedals are also widely used by triathletes.
Compared to other pedals on the market, Speedplay pedals are characterised by the attachment system on the cleat and not on the pedal. The result is a significantly faster clip-on closure and, since the pedals are double-sided, the attachment is possible on both sides of the pedal. The line is cleaner, minimalist and aerodynamic. In addition, force transmission is more powerful and minimises energy expenditure. The most famous models for road bikes include the Speedplay X, the Speedplay Zero and the Light Action.
In 1992 the Speedplay Frog was born, specifically for MTBs and featuring an even lighter locking system.
