Pirelli's off-road tire is called Scorpion MTB (a trademark of the company). As it was for the PZero Velo road tires that marked Pirelli's return to cycling, the choice of a meaningful name was deliberate. The Scorpion is historically known as Pirelli's Motocross tire, contributing to over 70 MX world titles. Like all Pirelli bike tires, the new MTB tire range was developed at Pirelli's innovation center, the R&D laboratories at Milano Bicocca. This is the main among the 11 Pirelli research centers worldwide, investing approximately 200 million euros annually in tire development and innovation with over 1000 dedicated researchers. The SmartGrip Compound, the core of the new tire, is produced at Pirelli's Racing facilities, where the compounds for the renowned F1 tires are also engineered.

Pirelli's extensive experience in Motocross over the years played a crucial role, especially in defining the tread patterns of the Scorpion MTB range. The shape and height of the knobs, spacing, cross-link, and angles were studied for maximum efficiency on specific terrains. When designing the new tires based on terrain consistency, Pirelli's engineers had to consider many variables, from the rider's driving style to the latest developments in rim profiles and sizes. Therefore, the construction technology for the new Scorpion MTB tires varies for different sizes: each size benefits from dedicated development. The combination and interaction of structures, reinforcements, static and dynamic properties of the compound, sizes, and different tread patterns for various terrains have been an area of technical innovation for Pirelli, emphasizing their approach to product development based on consumer-specific needs. The Scorpion MTB range allows riders to freely choose the size that best suits their riding style without compromising performance.

Just as SmartNettm Silica addressed the trade-off between rolling resistance and wet grip in PZero Velo road tires, SmartGrip Compound in Scorpion MTB closes the gap between tear resistance and grip on wet surfaces.
