A QUESTION OF WATTS
In 2019 Áspero took the world by storm by announcing a “new era of speed in gravel”. The new Áspero remains faithful to those early, simpler days of true gravel, but with some improvements: a threaded bottom bracket, neater cable routing and a UDH-compatible derailleur hanger for those who want to use SRAM drivetrains. And of course, it is more aerodynamic. In the case of Áspero, however, aerodynamic performance is not so much about speed for its own sake as it is about saving energy, achieved by reducing aerodynamic drag. After a long day with a headwind, the three watts saved compared to the previous Áspero could be equivalent to one less energy gel that your stomach will have to digest – try it to believe it!
In addition to reducing aerodynamic drag, we have also lowered the stays to give a little more rear grip and slightly reduced front-end stiffness to make the last hours of those really long races less painful. Between the lowered stays we have also added a bit more mud clearance, drawing on what we learned from the R5-CX (and from the 2023 Unbound mudfest). These are many seemingly small improvements, but they add up to many more. The result is a bike that looks a lot like the original Áspero, but is in fact faster, more comfortable and more versatile.
T47 Bottom Bracket
Áspero uses the asymmetric bottom bracket with T47a threading that we pioneered on the R5-CX. It is a simple and user-friendly interface that allows us to offer the advantages of BBRight in a form that is easier to use.
UNIVERSAL DERAILLEUR HANGER
We have used SRAM’s Universal Derailleur Hanger (UDH) as the standard on the new Áspero. It is ideal if you want to live your riding experience to the fullest with the most modern SRAM drivetrains while at the same time having the certainty of compatibility with future drivetrain developments.
Easy and customizable front end
Áspero shares the same bearing dimensions as the R5, Soloist, R5-CX and Caledonia, which means you can use any combination of headset and stem. Do you want a super-racing, fully integrated look? Go for the R5 ST31 and HB13 models.
