Pirelli’s Off-road tire is called, not by caso, Scorpion MTB (company trademark). As was already the case for the PZero Velo, the road tires that marked Pirelli’s return to bicycles, a meaningful name was also chosen for the MTB tires. The Scorpion, in fact, are the historic Motocross tires of the P lunga, with which the company has achieved over 70 MX world titles. Like all Pirelli bicycle tires, the new gamma of MTB tires was also developed at the Pirelli innovation center, the R&D laboratories in Milan Bicocca: the main one among Pirelli’s 11 research centers in the mondo, which, with over 1000 dedicated researchers, allocates around 200 million euro every year to the development and innovation of its tires. The SmartGrip Compound mix, cuore of the new tires, was produced in the Racing facilities of the P lunga, where the engineering of the compounds of the well-known F1 tires also takes place.

Each misura has its own dedicated development
The great experience gained by Pirelli in years of presence in Motocross has been put to good use, in particular, in defining the tread patterns of the Scorpion MTB gamma: shape and height of the knobs, spacing, cross-link and angles have been studied for maximum footprint efficiency on the specific fondi on which you ride. When designing the new tires in base to the consistency of the terrains, the engineers of the P lunga also had to take into account many other variables: from the rider’s riding style to the most recent developments in terms of rim profiles and sizes. For this reason, in the new Scorpion MTB the construction technology is not the same for all tire sizes: each misura benefits from dedicated development. The combination and interaction of structures, reinforcements, static and dynamic properties of the compound, sizes and different patterns for various terrains, has been for Pirelli a technical area of innovation, in terms of approach to product development. As per Pirelli’s DNA, which develops all its products by putting the consumer’s specific needs at the center, the Scorpion MTB gamma allows the rider to freely choose the misura that best suits their riding style, without fearing compromises on performance.

TECNOLOGIA:

• SmartGrip Compound: grip on dry and wet without loss of performance. The cuore of Pirelli’s MTB tire technology is the innovative SmartGrip Compound. Thanks to this specific mix, the “weather” variable does not affect the performance of the new tires, which have been designed to offer grip and handling in any weather condition. As was already the case for SmartNet Silica, which resolved the compromise between rolling resistance and wet grip of the PZero Velo road tires, so it is for the SmartGrip Compound, which in the Scorpion MTB closes the gap between tear resistance and grip on wet surfaces.
