YETI ASR ULTIMATE BIKE
The ASR is back. We have never made a lighter full-suspension bike, but that’s only half the story. Bring the right suspension to the right mountain bike races. The kind of racing that requires skill, not just lungs.
The new ASR marks the most extensive carbon project we have ever undertaken. It has produced the lightest full-suspension bike in our history, updated the flex-stay design to meet today’s kinematic standards, delivered proper support, killer small-bump sensitivity, insane traction, and 100% usable travel.
Custom lamella shapes, critical material selection, smart layup methods, and smooth transitions between every carbon ply have removed redundant carbon, delivering radical strength at super light weight. Such an ambitious program, based on in-depth carbon analysis tools, is an absolute first for Yeti.
We wanted to eliminate carbon redundancy everywhere, not just where it was easy. Our more than 20 years of experience with solo carbon told us we could remove solid volume at the pivots and still exceed cross-country demands, with no downside in performance or bearing life.
Another goal of the ASR was to design every frame with the same riding characteristics, to give every rider the same feel, regardless of size. Since the ASR uses single-ply carbon layups to eliminate redundant carbon, every sheet had to be cut with precision. Boring? Yes. Worth it? Absolutely yes. This made it possible to tune size-specific frames at a much more sensitive level, and also to precisely match the torsional stiffness and flex profiles of the frame.
The year was 2003 and our flex-stay design represented a decade-long approach to full-suspension XC. Today, the embodied ASR considers the relationships between leverage rate, link dimensions, the material properties of the carbon layup, and modern short-stroke shocks to deliver XC-specific suspension that is responsive, efficient, and surprisingly light.
Unlike the conventional methodology of pivot placement for longer-travel applications, the ASR’s pivots are positioned so that the walls of the existing tubes constitute a significant part of their shape and structure. To further reduce redundant carbon and save weight.
The ASR features an almost linear progression curve to offer the best balance of efficiency in the middle of the suspension, where XC racers spend most of their time. But with 20% sag, it offers small-bump sensitivity typical of longer-travel bikes. In addition, the last ¼ of the travel is designed to increase ramp, so that the biggest hits and aggressive race lines don’t knock the bike off line.
YETI ASR ULTIMATE BIKE MAIN FEATURES:
- Secure entry and exit fastenings on the frame eliminate noise and rubbing. The external brake routing from the handlebar to the head tube makes servicing easier, and there is no aerodynamic advantage in hiding them.
- On the muddiest race days, the integrated rear mudguard prevents debris from hindering suspension movement. It weighs very little. It’s a frame feature you only notice when it’s gone.
- The Hangerless interface creates the most robust and precise shifting, allowing Eagle Transmission derailleurs to be mounted directly to the wheel axle and to clamp on both sides of the frame. But Hangerless Interface is also perfect for previous drivetrains, thanks to the included Universal Derailleur Hanger (UDH).
