The new Santa Cruz Tallboy C XT 29er Mountain Bike with 120 mm travel takes a step forward in what short-travel bikes are really capable of doing. With incredible lower-link VPP suspension, a sleek design, the classic refinement of Santa Cruz and a rather radical geometry, the Tallboy returns as a popular hero that breaks the mold.
Sure, 10 mm more travel may seem like just a small step, but combined with a lower-link VPP suspension design, this is a giant leap for the Tallboy.
It’s the kind of bike that makes you sprint while climbing, traversing, crossing or descending, thanks to the maximum efficiency of the VPP design and the light, responsive frame. But since it shares the same engineering principles as our long-travel bikes, the progressive shock mounted on the lower link feels at home both in cross-country and in the most extreme conditions. Paired with a 130 mm fork, the new Tallboy becomes even more attractive for riders who like to push to the limit.
Established theory suggests that shorter-travel bikes are ridden more slowly, and therefore require steeper, more conservative geometries. In reality, however, when was the last time you slowed down on a fun trail just because you weren’t on a bigger bike? No caution, all adrenalina. So we did the same here, imitating the geometry of our longer-travel bikes to create a bike with a 65.5-degree head angle, a generous front center and a short-offset fork, something rare on a bike of this type.
And the radical thinking doesn’t stop there. The super-short 430 mm chainstays of the Tallboy have a +/- 10 mm rear axle adjustment to ensure that riders of all sizes and styles feel equally comfortable. Match this with a relatively low BB (335 mm and a 37.5 mm drop) and you have a combination ready to snap through every corner and launch out the other side.
