A bicycle drivetrain is a collection of various components designed to work together. It's a device capable of increasing or decreasing the rotational speed of the wheel in relation to the rotational speed of the cranks. The system is based on a series of chainrings, called sprockets and chainrings, and a mechanism (derailleur) that shifts the chain from one chainring or sprocket to another. The operating principle is simple: by combining larger or smaller chainrings and sprockets, the rotational speed of the wheel relative to the crank is varied. This category includes the crankset, which is the combination of the front chainrings and the cranks. They can consist of a single chainring, two (called a double), or three (called a triple). The chainrings can be integrated into the right crankset, as on fixed-gear bikes or supermarket touring bikes, or fixed to the crankset with special threaded pins.
