Wilderness Trail Bikes (usually abbreviated to WTB) is a company founded in 1982, specializing in the production of mountain bike saddles, rims, and tires. Marin County (where the company is headquartered) is the birthplace of mountain biking, in the late 1970s and early 1980s. In 1980, Steve Potts, a Mill Valley frame builder, began partnering with Mark Slate to help meet the growing demand for mountain bikes. Charlie Cunningham, in Fairfax, had been building mountain bikes since 1979 with heat-treated aluminum frames that featured unique Type II forks, roller-cam brakes, custom hubs, and other components that were among the first of their kind designed specifically for mountain bikes.Increasing demand and pricing advantages led the three to found WTB in 1982. In 1988, Patrick Seidler also joined the company, and from then on, the company began developing technologies to resell to traditional bicycle manufacturers, such as tire patterns made by Specialized Bicycle Components, the Blackburn B-52 water bottle cage, geometry for the 1987 Trek Bicycle Corporation mountain bike line, and the use of Greaseguard in the high-end Suntour XC Pro component group.
