Speedplayis an American brand founded in San Diego, California, with the aim of finding a better and faster closure system for clipless pedals.
The first pedal, the Speedplay X, was patented in 1989 by designer Richard Byrne. The company was then officially founded in July 1991. Thanks to commitment and years of research, the Speedplay brand has established itself on the international market, and its pedals are used by professional cyclists such as Cadel Evans, Fabian Cancellara, Jens Voigt, Taylor Phinney, and Thor Hushovd. Speedplay road pedals are also widely used by triathletes.
Compared to other pedals on the market, Speedplay pedals feature a fastening system on the Speedplay cleat, not the pedal itself. This results in a significantly faster clip closure, and since the pedals are double-sided, they can be attached to either side of the pedal. The overall design is cleaner, more minimalist, and more aerodynamic. Furthermore, power transmission is more powerful and minimizes energy expenditure.
In addition to the Speedplay X, among the most popular models for road bikes are the Speedplay Zero and the Light Action.
In 1992, the Speedplay Frog was born, specifically for MTBs and featuring an even lighter closure system.
