Founded in 1976 by Kenth Öhlin, a racer with a natural talent for mechanics, Öhlins Racing has been an integral part of the automotive and motorcycle industries for 40 years, establishing itself in the market for suspension technology for all types of vehicles and quickly becoming synonymous with the gold standard. Despite its initial success, the company continued to grow, introducing increasingly innovative and efficient designs in the development of electronically controlled suspension technologies, such as CES (Electronically Controlled Suspension), which revolutionized the automotive industry by removing much of the compromise between ride and handling found in conventional suspensions. In standard CES applications, the driver can freely switch between several pre-programmed settings at any time, giving the suspension widely varying characteristics—typically a comfort setting, a sport setting, and an advanced setting that automatically adjusts to the current driving conditions and the driver's current driving style. From these basic settings, the system automatically controls the damping characteristics of each of the four shock absorbers in real time, changing settings up to 400 or 500 times per second! In the 1980s, Öhlins's superior performance attracted the attention of industrial giants, and in 1987, Öhlins was acquired by Yamaha.
